Su Casa January Roundtable: (Re)claiming our Homes and Communities
January 29, 2012 • Potluck dinner at 6, discussion at 7 • 1434 1/2 W. 51st (west of Laflin, between the murals)
Please join for a discussion about housing-related resistance–from refusing eviction, to reclaiming vacant homes for homeless families, to reclaiming ‘abandoned’ properties. All are welcome to discuss personal experiences of (re)claiming homes for themselves, their families, or their communities, or to share their thoughts on the politics and practicalities of occupying homes.
Questions and themes we may discuss include…
–Is occupying your own home or a vacant home an effective political statement? Is it a political statement at all?
–What does the Catholic Worker movement have in common with housing occupations and housing solidarity?
–What are examples of local and global movements that use eviction resistance and land reclamation to provide housing and/or to make a political statement?
–What roles can allies play in helping people to remain in or (re)claim their homes?
–How can we apply all this in our own community?
….and anything else that sparks your interest!
