We reach out to our Back of the Yards family (and beyond), providing food at Hogan’s Soup Kitchen, children’s activities at Su Casa Kids, and education to plunge groups.
Soup Kitchen
Chicagoland parishes and Su Casa teamed up 15 years ago to bring food to the hungry in our neighborhood. Today our weekly soup kitchen provides lunch, bags of food to-go, and some clothes to those in need of them.
Every Sunday from 12 to 1 PM we host Hogan’s Soup Kitchen. Nearby churches on a 2 month rotation join the effort by pitching in meals and volunteers. Some parishes have found their niche with us, earning titles like “the taco church.” Our soup kitchen thrives on regularity; one of the members of our Board, Frieda Holley, has run our soup kitchen for over a decade.
We try to foster hospitality during each phase of the meal. Before they eat, guests can look through clothing donations and help themselves to whatever they’d like. On their way out they can take food donations which Su Casa receives earlier on Sunday. When there’s space the volunteers sit down and enjoy their meal with the soup kitchen’s guests.
Roundtable
Come to a Roundtable meeting for a yummy potluck dinner and some delectable discussion. We satisfy the stomach and fan the flames of curiosity and communication every fourth Sunday of the month.
